From Drapers to Dining on Fossgate
The building we now call home has its own remarkable story, and we’re thrilled to be part of it.
Just over Foss Bridge, at the end of bustling Fossgate, stands a building that has long been part of York’s fabric – quite literally. Constructed in the 1870s, this confident Victorian structure was originally home to W J Whitehead & Co. – a linen and woollen draper. For many years, it served the city with fine fabrics and tailoring supplies, becoming a trusted name in textiles and a staple in the daily lives of York’s residents.
In 1915, the building welcomed a new chapter with F.R. Stubbs, an ironmonger who would become a beloved institution for nearly a century. Stubbs was more than just a hardware store; it was a treasure trove where the people of York could find everything from tools to household essentials and was sometimes even referred to as Aladdin’s Cave by the locals.
After Stubbs closed its doors in 2001, the building stood empty for a few years before being transformed into a restaurant space. In 2006, it became home to Loch Fyne, bringing a new culinary experience to the area.
In November 2023, Loch Fyne closed its doors, and in December 2024, the building became our new home.
When we set out to renovate the space and transform it into Marzano, we knew we wanted to honour that history and blend it seamlessly with the warmth and hospitality of an Italian restaurant. We’ve taken inspiration from the dressmaking history of the building, incorporating draped fabrics that nod to the art of tailoring. One of the most special elements of the design is the original joinery from FR Stubbs’ display counters, which now serve as the focal point of our back bar.
As you dine with us, we invite you to take a moment to appreciate the layers of history that surround you. From its origins as a Drapers to its time as a cherished ironmonger, this building has always been a place of service and connection. At Marzano, we’re honoured to continue that tradition, offering a warm welcome and a memorable dining experience in a setting steeped in York’s rich heritage.
